For decades, the Hewlett-Packard name has been synonymous with a durable, efficient printer that is easy to install and operate. The HP CP4005n printer series lives up to the company's reputation. Two models, the CP4005n and the CP4005dn, have almost identical features, but the latter model has two differences that may be important for some users.

The CP4005dn provides the option for automatic duplex printing, while two-sided printing on the CP4005n requires manual intervention. Standard memory on the 4005n is 128 megabytes, and it is 256 megabytes on the 4005dn. Both models can be upgraded to 512 megabytes of total memory.

Both models offer up to 25 pages per minute for color and as many as 30 pages per minute of black and white printing. The first page is available in as few as 10 seconds. The maximum print resolution, in dots-per-inch, is 600 by 600.

The multipurpose tray can hold as many as 100 sheets of legal, executive, letter or statement-size paper, or it can dispense envelopes. The printers come with a 500-sheet paper tray, and a second tray, which will also hold 500 sheets, is optional. The multipurpose tray can handle paper up to 58-pound bond, but the trays need paper no heavier than 32-pound bond.

Color printing is made more accurate by the use of three separate color toner cartridges. By replacing the cyan, yellow or magenta cartridges only as needed, it is possible to save on ink costs. The fourth cartridge is your basic black. All cartridges for the printer are rated at 7,500 pages each.

Recommended usage for the HP CP4005n toner is between 2,000 and 7,500 pages each month. Its duty cycle, which HP defines as the maximum output when factors such as printer life and supply replacement frequency are considered, is no more than 80,000 pages per month. The duty cycle is most meaningful for comparing various Hewlett-Packard printer models.
